The Clean Water Act (CWA) is the primary federal law in the United States governing water pollution.
Passed in 1972, the objective of the Federal Water Pollution Control Act, commonly referred to as the Clean Water Act (CWA), is to restore and maintain the chemical, physical, and biological integrity of the nation's waters by preventing point and nonpoint pollution sources, providing assistance to publicly owned treatment works for the improvement of wastewater treatment, and maintaining the integrity of wetlands.
The principal body of law in effect is based on the Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments of 1972 which was a significant expansion of the Federal Water Pollution Control Act of 1948. Major amendments were enacted in the Clean Water Act of 1977 and the Water Quality Act of 1987.
