Being an American is standing up for freedom, liberty and the pursuit of happiness and to be prepared for global peace. Say no to tyrants and ys to freedom and justice for all Americans.
American citizenship provides for specific rights, duties, benefits and serves as a foundation of fundamental rights derived from and protected by the US Constitution and laws of the United States.
They include the right to freedom of expression, to vote, to due process, to live and work in the United States, and to receive federal assistance.
However, not all American citizens have been treated equally, especially as it refers to as those living in Puerto Rico, who lack the right to vote in national elections.
In Puerto Rico and the other USA territories, residents do not have voting representation in the Congress and are not entitled to electoral votes for President.
Puerto Rico is a territory under the sovereignty of the federal government, but is not part of any state nor is it a state itself.
